F1 visa Rwanda guide for May 2026. Step-by-step process from I-20 to DS-160, MRV payment at Access Bank, and booking your US Embassy Kigali appointment.

This is your complete, up-to-date roadmap for the F1 visa Rwanda process in May 2026, from the day your I-20 arrives to the day you confirm your interview at the US Embassy in Kigali.

F1 visa Rwanda applications follow a clear sequence, but the details change. The payment bank has moved more than once in recent years, the appointment portal switched providers in late 2024, and small process changes can cost students a week or more if they miss them. This guide walks you through the F1 visa Rwanda process exactly as it works in May 2026.

This is part one of a three-part series. Part two covers interview preparation, and part three walks you through what to expect on interview day at the embassy.

In this guide, you will learn

1. What to check the day your I-20 arrives 2. How to complete the DS-160 form 3. How to create your account on usvisaappt.com 4. How to pay the MRV fee at Access Bank Rwanda 5. How to book your interview appointment 6. Why the process keeps changing and how to stay current

Step 1: Check Your I-20 the Day It Arrives

Your Form I-20 is the document that allows you to apply for an F1 visa Rwanda interview. It comes from your US school after you accept your admission offer and submit any required deposit. Before you do anything else, check three things on the I-20.

  • Your full legal name matches your passport exactly
  • Your date of birth is correct
  • The SEVIS ID number at the top right of the form is visible and clear

If anything is wrong, contact your school's international student office before you start the application. Fixing the I-20 later is harder than fixing it now.

You can read more about the I-20 on the official Study in the States website at studyinthestates.dhs.gov.

Step 2: Complete the DS-160 Form

The DS-160 is the online nonimmigrant visa application form. You complete it on the official US Department of State website at ceac.state.gov/genniv.

Plan to spend two to three hours on the DS-160. Some sections need careful attention.

Key sections to focus on

  • Personal information: use your name exactly as it appears on your passport
  • Address and phone: use your current Rwandan address and a phone number you actually answer
  • Passport: enter your passport number, issue date, and expiry date carefully
  • Travel information: select F1 as the visa class and enter the SEVIS ID and school address from your I-20
  • US point of contact: this is your school, and the address is on your I-20
  • Education and work: list your secondary school, any universities, and any work history
  • Security and background: answer every question honestly

When you finish, you will receive a DS-160 confirmation page with a barcode and a ten-digit confirmation number that starts with AA. Print it and save the PDF. You will need this confirmation number to book your appointment.

You can save your progress and return later using your application ID, but only for 30 days.

Step 3: Create Your Account on usvisaappt.com

The US Embassy Kigali switched to a new visa appointment system on September 30, 2024. The current portal is usvisaappt.com. The older websites such as ustraveldocs.com and ais.usvisainfo.com are no longer used for Rwanda.

Go to usvisaappt.com, select Rwanda as your location, and create a new profile. You will enter your DS-160 confirmation number, your visa class (F1), and your personal details. The system will then generate a payment slip you can use at the bank.

Important notes about the appointment portal

  • Use a strong password and save it where you can find it
  • Make sure the name on your profile matches your DS-160 and your passport
  • Do not create multiple accounts, because this can confuse the system

Step 4: Pay the MRV Fee at Access Bank Rwanda

The MRV fee, or Machine Readable Visa fee, is the application fee you pay before booking your interview. For F1 visa Rwanda applicants in May 2026, the MRV fee is paid in cash at Access Bank Rwanda.

This is one of the parts of the process that has changed more than once. The MRV payment used to be handled by Ecobank before 2022, then moved to GT Bank, and is now at Access Bank Rwanda as of the 2024 service provider transition. Always check the payment instructions on your usvisaappt.com profile before going to the bank, because the bank can change again in the future.

How the payment works

1. Log in to your usvisaappt.com profile and generate a payment slip 2. The slip shows a deposit number, the fee amount in Rwandan Francs, and bank details 3. Print the slip or save it on your phone to show at the bank teller 4. Go to any designated Access Bank Rwanda branch with the slip and cash 5. Pay the full amount and collect your receipt

The MRV receipt is critical. It carries the receipt number that the embassy uses to verify your payment when you book your interview. Keep the original receipt safe and take a photo of it as backup.

The MRV fee is non-refundable and is generally valid for one year from the date of payment. If you do not use it within that window, you lose the fee.

What your payment slip should show

Your Access Bank payment slip will show your name, your visa class, the deposit reference number, the fee amount in RWF, and the bank stamp confirming payment. Make sure all your details on the slip are correct before you leave the bank.

Step 5: Wait for the Payment to Reflect in the System

After you pay at Access Bank, the payment usually takes one to two business days to appear in your usvisaappt.com profile. You cannot book an appointment until the system confirms the payment.

Do not panic if you do not see it immediately. Check the next business day, and the day after. If after three business days the payment still does not show, contact the support email listed on usvisaappt.com and include a photo of your bank receipt.

Step 6: Book Your F1 Visa Rwanda Interview Appointment

Once your payment is reflected, log back into usvisaappt.com and book your interview at the US Embassy in Kigali. Choose a date that gives you enough time to prepare. Many students try to book the earliest available slot, but giving yourself two to three weeks to prepare is usually better than rushing in three days.

When you confirm the appointment, you will receive an appointment confirmation page. Print it and save the PDF.

Your three key documents

  • DS-160 confirmation page
  • MRV fee receipt from Access Bank
  • Appointment confirmation from usvisaappt.com

You will also need to pay the SEVIS fee on a separate website before your interview. That step, along with everything else interview-related, is covered in part two of this series.

Why the F1 Visa Rwanda Process Keeps Changing

If you have spoken to a friend or relative who applied for an F1 visa Rwanda a few years ago, their advice may be out of date. In the last several years, the process has changed in important ways.

  • The MRV payment bank moved from Ecobank to GT Bank, then to Access Bank
  • The appointment system switched from ustraveldocs.com to usvisaappt.com in September 2024
  • Some document and biometrics steps have been updated by the embassy

The lesson is simple. Always check the official instructions on usvisaappt.com and on the US Embassy Kigali website at rw.usembassy.gov before you act. This article is accurate as of May 2026, but you should verify the current bank and portal before you pay any fee.

What to Do Next

Once your appointment is confirmed, your real preparation begins. Studying your university, building your story, paying the SEVIS fee, and running mock interviews are all part of the next stage.

F1 Visa Rwanda FAQs

Where do I pay the MRV fee in Rwanda?

As of May 2026, the MRV fee for F1 visa Rwanda applicants is paid in cash at Access Bank Rwanda. Always verify the current bank on your usvisaappt.com profile before paying, because the designated bank has changed more than once in recent years.

How long is the MRV fee receipt valid?

The MRV fee receipt is generally valid for one year from the date of payment. If you do not schedule and attend an interview within that period, the fee is forfeited and you must pay again.

Can I book an F1 visa Rwanda appointment before I pay the MRV fee?

No. You must pay the MRV fee and wait for it to reflect in the usvisaappt.com system before you can book an appointment.

What if my DS-160 has an error after I submit it?

You can usually still update or submit a new DS-160 before your interview. Bring both confirmation pages to the embassy and inform the consular officer.
